ROME—The small Italian town of Melito Porto Salvo in the region of Calabria sits on the southernmost tip of the toe of Italy’s boot, with rugged hills rolling down to the unspoiled coastline where the Ionian and Mediterranean seas meet. It is not a tourist destination, per se, despite its Bergamot forests, impressive dwellings built into ancient rocks, and stunning views of Mt. Etna across the Strait of Messina in Sicily. There are simply friendlier places in Italy to visit.

Melito Porto Salvo is known primarily as the foothold of the powerful Iamonte crime family, an ‘ndrina or clan associated with the ‘Ndrangheta, Italy’s most potent organized crime syndicate. “Literally 100 percent of this town is under the control of the Iamonte family,” says Claudio Cordova, a local journalist who runs Il Dispaccio, or The Dispatch (named after Joseph Pulitzer’s muckraking 19th-century St. Louis Post-Dispatch). “And that power means that no one talks much about what happens here, which is immensely helpful to the ‘Ndrangheta which then gets a pass.”

The Iamonte crime family’s grip is apparently unbreakable, even though many members of the patriarchy are in jail, including the boss Remingo Iamonte and his favorite son, Giovanni Iamonte, who is now 30 years old. The latter stands accused with six other local men of orchestrating the repeated gang rape of a girl who was 13 when her ordeal began in late 2013, and attempting to blackmail her with intimate photos she took of herself.

Cordova says the branco, or herd, of young gangsters were well-known to law enforcement, but because the victim did not come from a powerful crime family, there was little motivation to step in. The gang rapes allegedly started when Maddalena, as the girl is called in court records, dated Iamonte’s best friend, Davide Schimizzi, who was then 20. At the time, Maddalena’s parents were separating and the young girl was especially easy prey.

Early in the relationship, Schimizzi had convinced Maddalena to send him provocative photos of herself, which local investigators say he then used to blackmail her when he decided to share her sexually with his friends, threatening to distribute them via social media where she would be condemned for her “libertine” behavior, which is particularly frowned upon in small communities of conservative Calabria.

When Maddalena refused to go along with the threats and tried to leave the relationship, which she did for a short time during which she apparently texted another boy, investigators say Schimizzi was jealous, and furious. To avenge her supposed betrayal, he allegedly set up a series of forced sexual encounters with Iamonte and five of their friends: Daniele Benedetto and Lorenzo Tripodi, then 19, and Pasquale Principato, Michele Nucera, Antonio Verduci then 20, which went on for more than two years. Schimizzi wrote to the other young men on Facebook Messenger, which was entered into court documents, that “The rape is difficult at first, but then she will calm down.”

Schimizzi was apparently not directly involved in the rapes, but rather directed them both in person and remotely. According to court documents, Maddalena was raped in cars, in the open countryside, and at some of the young men’s houses. She was made to pose for sadistic pornographic photos which they then shared among themselves, and she was forced to succumb to what the court describes as acts of “extreme sexual perversion” on the part of the seven men.

Finally, when Maddalena turned 16, nearly three years after the horror began, she wrote about the abuse in a creative writing essay for her English teacher, who was also the school psychologist.

At first the teacher, who cannot be named because she is under protective custody, alerted Maddalena’s parents, who were not exactly amicably separated at the time. The teacher says Maddalena’s father was indignant, but her mother, curiously less so, warned against denouncing the powerful Mafia families involved. The father, now also living under protective custody, held off for as long as he could, instead helping comfort and clean his daughter’s wounds when she came home from the rapes.

The father had first approached Iamonte and Schimizzi in early 2016 to warn them to stop abusing his daughter or he would go to police. According to court testimony, Iamonte told him not to bother, that nothing would come out of a complaint from such a weak man. “Let me know if you decide to anyway, though,” Iamonte told the victim’s father, according to court documents. “Then we’ll see what will be done.”


Finally, when he could no longer stand by to watch his daughter suffer, he denounced Schimizzi and Iamonte, against Maddalena and her mother’s wishes, and the seven men were arrested for aggravated rape and torture of a minor, possessing child pornography, and a host of other charges. Their trial, which opened behind closed doors last year only to be suspended pending various legal acts filed by the seven suspects’ lawyers to try to free them from jail, continues next week.

But it is hardly an open and shut case.

During the initial phases of the investigation, police checked various historical wiretaps of the Iamonte crime family and found that the crime boss Remingo Iamonte apparently had been in a consensual sexual relationship with Maddalena’s mother in the years before he went to jail in 2010.


Then, upon further investigation, it was suggested that Giovanni, the crime boss’ son and lead instigator of Maddalena’s alleged gang rape vendetta, was, like his father, also in a carnal relationship with Maddalena’s mother, although investigators are skeptical that this is true. The younger Iamonte’s defense has been to claim a case of mistaken identity, that he was actually involved with the mother, not the young daughter. Maddalena’s mother denies such a relationship.

During the preliminary hearings to determine if there was enough evidence to go forward with a trial, the presiding judge, Barbara Bennato, asked Iamonte if he had known his own father had a relationship with the woman he claims to have slept with himself. “Yes,” he said. “I read about it somewhere.”

To complicate matters more, despite the fact that Iamonte and the others were seen multiple times picking up Maddalena to take her to the countryside to torture her, the townspeople are largely too afraid to testify in court against any of the seven men on trial. There are still plenty of members of the Iamonte crime family free to exact revenge.

Cordova, who has covered the gang rape case from the beginning, told The Daily Beast that instead of supporting the victim, the townspeople have blamed Maddalena for “getting involved with such a family” and for “wearing miniskirts” and “taking pictures of herself.” The local Calabria channels of Italy’s state-run broadcaster RAI did a short story on the case in which it asked a dozen or so local residents what they thought. Not one condemned the alleged rapists, instead offering comments like “things like that happen everywhere” and “it was the girl’s fault.”


The trial continues in Calabria on April 13 and is expected to reach a verdict by the end of the year.

RUSSIA will take its complaints over the Salisbury nerve agent attack to The Hague the day after the Porton Down military research facility said it could not trace the agent's precise source.

The Foreign Office accused Russia of attempting to undermine the work of the OPCW and engaging in "another diversionary tactic".

It comes a day after the head of Porton Down said his scientists have not verified that the nerve agent used in Salisbury came from Russia.


A Foreign Office spokesman said: "Russia has called this meeting to undermine the work of the OPCW, which, fully in accordance with the chemical weapons convention, is providing the UK with technical assistance and evaluation through independent analysis of samples from the Salisbury attack.

But he told Sky News it was not Porton Down's role to work out where the agent came from and suggested the Government's conclusion that it was highly likely to have come from Russia was based on "a number of other sources".

President Vladimir Putin, citing Mr Aitkenhead, called for a thorough investigation into the poisoning during a visit to Turkey, where he said "the speed at which the anti-Russian campaign has been launched causes bewilderment."

Porton Down's identification of the substance used in the attack on the Skripals as Novichok was a key plank in the evidence presented by the UK in Theresa May's successful bid to recruit international support in the dispute with Moscow, resulting in the expulsion of more than 100 Russian diplomats from over 20 countries.

German politician Armin Laschet, an ally of Chancellor Angela Merkel, said: "If one forces nearly all Nato countries into solidarity, shouldn't one have certain evidence?

"Regardless of what one thinks about Russia, my study of international law taught me a different way to deal with other states."

Mr Aitkenhead also rejected Russian claims the substance could have come from Porton Down.

A Downing Street spokesman said: "As the Prime Minister has made clear, the UK would much rather have in Russia a constructive partner ready to play by the rules.

"But this attack in Salisbury was part of a pattern of increasingly aggressive Russian behaviour, as well as a new and dangerous phase in Russian activity within the continent and beyond."

The director of Russia's foreign intelligence service Sergei Naryshkin described Britain's claims that Moscow is to blame for the Salisbury poisoning as a "provocation".

Russian news agency Tass reported Mr Naryshkin telling the Seventh Moscow Conference on Global Security: "Even as far as the Skripal case goes, which is a grotesque provocation rudely staged by the British and US intelligence agencies, some European countries are in no hurry to follow London and Washington, preferring to sort the situation out.”

GAZA/JERUSALEM (Reuters) - A Palestinian man was killed by Israeli gunfire in Gaza on Tuesday, Palestinian medics said, raising the death toll from clashes along the border to 17, and Israel's defence minister warned further protests would be met with similar force.

Tens of thousands of Palestinians began a six-week-long protest last Friday in tent encampments set up along the fenced border of the Israeli-blockaded Gaza Strip. They are pressing for a right of return for refugees to the villages and towns where their families lived before 1948 in what is now Israel.

Sixteen Palestinians died after being shot by Israeli troops on the first day of the protest, Palestinian medical officials said. The 17th Palestinian killed, 25-year-old Ahmed Omar Arafa, was standing about 50 metres (165 feet) from the fence when he was shot, his father, Omar Arafa, told Reuters.

"He was standing next to me; he posed no danger to them but they killed him," he said. An Israeli military spokeswoman had no initial information on the latest reported fatality.

The deaths occurred in the course of one of the largest Palestinian demonstrations along the 65-km (40-mile) border in years. Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman defended Israel's response.

"I warn (Gaza protesters) against continuing the provocation. We have set clear game rules and we do not intend to change them. Every person who comes close to the fence is endangering their lives," he said on a visit to the border.

"This was a well-organised provocation by Hamas's armed wing in an attempt to harm our sovereignty, to disrupt daily life and to disturb Israelis on their Seder (traditional Passover meal) night. We are doing what we must do."

Gaza, a small coastal enclave, has been ruled by Hamas, a Palestinian Islamist movement sworn to Israel's destruction, for much of the time since Israeli soldiers and settlers withdrew in 2005 after a 38-year occupation.

The military said its troops used live fire only against people trying to sabotage the fence or rolling burning tyres and throwing rocks. Palestinian organisers said they had called for a peaceful protest and Hamas denied that its fighters had fired on Israeli forces, using the crowds as cover, though it said five of the dead were members of its armed wing.

Lieberman has characterised most of those killed last week as "terrorists that we know well who are active in the armed wing of Hamas and Islamic Jihad. They were not innocent civilians who were part of a civil protest".

In Gaza, protesters have begun gathering thousands of mirrors which they hope to use to blind Israeli soldiers on the other side of the fence. The protesters say they also intend to use laser pointers to distract Israeli army sharpshooters.

“We were saddened by the martyrdom of 16 of us, some of them we knew as friends. This Friday we shall rise to challenge the occupation which killed them, and show them we are not afraid,” said Issa Abu Jamea', 29, from Khan Younis in Gaza's south.

He said he had taken part in protests every Friday since U.S. President Donald Trump's Dec. 6 decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital, and to move the U.S. Embassy to the city. Its eastern half was taken by Israel in a 1967 war and is wanted by Palestinians for the capital of a future state.

FRIDAY OF TYRES

Palestinian organisers said they expect the number of participants to again swell to tens of thousands on Friday.

Riding on donkey carts and rickshaws, protesters scoured towns and villages across Gaza on Tuesday collecting old tyres from mechanics' shops, fields and garbage dumps. The thick, black smoke emitted by burning tyres can reduce the effects of tear gas used by Israel security forces, they say.

Abu Jamea' said that he and his friends had collected about a thousand tyres. The hash tag "Jomaat Al-Kawshook", or "Friday of Tyres", was trending on Twitter.

"We have prepared mirrors, lasers and tyres to burn ... they will help to distract Israeli snipers and blind them. We aim to protect ourselves and the protesters," Abu Jamea' said.

In Gaza City, Daoud Shehab, a protest organiser who is also spokesman for the militant Islamic Jihad, urged participants to remain peaceful. "We urge our people not to fall for Israeli provocation attempts," said Shebab.

The protest action is set to wind up on May 15, when Palestinians mark the “Naqba”, or “Catastrophe”, when hundreds of thousands fled or were driven out of their homes during violence that culminated in war in May 1948 between the newly created state of Israel and its Arab neighbours.

Israel has long ruled out any right of return, fearing it would lose its Jewish majority.

PATTAYA, Thailand — A pair of self-described sex instructors from Belarus have been stuck in a Thai detention center for weeks. They say they have evidence demonstrating Russian interference in the 2016 presidential campaign in the United States, and that they have offered it to the F.B.I. in exchange for a guarantee of their safety.

Their claim — that they are targets of a covert Russian operation to silence them because they know too much — might seem outlandish, but their case certainly includes some unusual circumstances.

They have influential enemies in Russia. They were arrested with the help of a “foreign spy,” according to the Thai police, and locked up on what is a fairly minor offense: working without a permit. And the F.B.I. says it tried to talk to the pair, suggesting that American investigators had not dismissed their account out of hand.

“They know we have more information,” one of the pair, Alexander Kirillov, 38, told The New York Times last month in an unauthorized phone call from the detention center in Bangkok. Mr. Kirillov said his co-defendant, Anastasia Vashukevich, 27, had angered some powerful people. “They know she knows a lot,” he said. “And that’s why they made this case against us.”

Ms. Vashukevich certainly knows how to get attention. In February, a top critic of Russia’s president, Vladimir V. Putin, released a video that included footage she recorded during a brief affair she had with a Russian aluminum tycoon while working as an escort aboard his yacht in 2016. The evidence included photos she posted of the tycoon and his guest, Sergei E. Prikhodko, a deputy prime minister, and recorded them talking about relations between the United States and Russia.

The aluminum tycoon, Oleg V. Deripaska, has close ties with Mr. Putin and with Paul Manafort, President Trump’s former campaign chairman, who has been indicted on money laundering charges by Robert S. Mueller III, the special counsel looking into election interference.

The escort and her seduction coach have been held largely incommunicado since March 5, when reporters for The Times and other news media outlets were kicked out of the detention center for speaking to them. They now face deportation and fear what might happen to them if they are sent home to Russia, where they live, or Belarus, the former Soviet republic where they grew up, which remains firmly within Russia’s influence. (Mr. Kirillov was traveling on a Russian passport.).

Neither of them is accustomed to silence. They and their circle of friends say they make a habit of recording everything they do as they go about their campaign of teaching seduction techniques and trying their skills on strangers, sometimes in public.

The two were arrested along with eight others on Feb. 25 when dozens of plainclothes police officers raided a workshop they were conducting for Russian tourists at a hotel in Pattaya, about 70 miles south of Bangkok.

The seminar was aimed mainly at male Russian tourists and offered instruction in how to seduce women. It was not illegal.

The police arrest report says that a “foreign spy” infiltrated the Russian-language seminar and provided the Royal Thai Police with information about the training.

Cellphone messages exchanged by the police show that the agent signaled the waiting officers when to raid the Ibis Pattaya Hotel conference room.

The work permit charge is relatively minor, and Mr. Kirillov had been conducting training sessions in Pattaya for years. But high-level officials appeared to take an unusual interest in this case: Six police generals and two colonels had responsibility for the raid, according to the arrest report.

Since the arrests, the government has tried to keep a tight lid on information. Friends said they had not been allowed to visit Ms. Vashukevich and Mr. Kirillov for weeks.

A law enforcement official said the F.B.I. tried to speak with the two but was not successful.

A Thai police spokesman, Lt. Col. Krissana Pattanacharoen, would not comment on whether Russia was behind the arrests, but he said it was not unusual for the police to use foreign operatives.

“Investigations are not one size fits all,” he said. “It depends entirely on the situation.”

Few other police officials have been willing to talk about the case. The American Embassy in Bangkok declined to comment. The Russian Embassy asked that questions be submitted in writing but did not answer them.

After the pair’s arrest, Mr. Kirillov sent a handwritten letter to the American Embassy in Bangkok asking for asylum for all 10 detainees. (At the time, Heather Nauert, a State Department spokeswoman, dismissed the case as “a pretty bizarre story” and indicated that the embassy had no plans to talk with them.)

Financial records show that companies controlled by Mr. Manafort owed millions of dollars to Mr. Deripaska, the aluminum tycoon. During the 2016 race, Mr. Manafort offered to give him private briefings about the campaign, though there is no indication that the tycoon took him up on the offer.

Ms. Vashukevich, who goes by the name Nastya Rybka online and recounts her story in a book, “Who Wants to Seduce a Billionaire,” became an escort under the guidance of Mr. Kirillov, better known as Alex Lesley, who has gained popularity in Russia for his advocacy of sexual freedom.

At the time of the yacht visit, Ms. Vashukevich had shaved six years off her age to pose as 19. She was sent by a Moscow modeling agency to a yacht off Norway along with six other escorts, according to her account.

She said she followed Mr. Kirillov’s instruction to record all her interactions with her target, the yacht’s owner, who turned out to be Mr. Deripaska.

Ms. Vashukevich told The Times in a brief interview last month at the detention center that she had more than 16 hours of recordings from the yacht, including conversations with three visitors who she believes were Americans.

She has called herself the “missing link” in the Russia investigation.

Her posts from 2016 came to prominence only after Aleksei A. Navalny, a Russian opposition leader, included them in a video in early February that made accusations about official corruption. Mr. Navalny also charged that Mr. Deripaska had delivered Mr. Manafort’s campaign reports to the Kremlin.

“Deripaska simply transmits this information to Putin,” Mr. Navalny said. “He’s very close to Putin after all.”

Before traveling to Thailand, Mr. Kirillov grew worried about repercussions from the exposé and asked a childhood friend, Eliot Cooper, to contact United States authorities on his behalf, Mr. Cooper said.

Mr. Cooper, who lives in Canada, said in a telephone interview that he called an F.B.I. hotline in February and proposed trading the recordings for the pair’s safety.

He said he had told the hotline agent about one recorded conversation in which Mr. Deripaska and Mr. Prikhodko discussed wanting Mr. Trump to win.

“I explained all of that to the F.B.I.,” he said. “They should have a transcript of everything and a recording of my voice.”

Mr. Cooper said he had never heard back from the agency. The F.B.I. declined to comment.

Mr. Cooper said that Mr. Kirillov had hidden copies and instructed associates to release them if he or Ms. Vashukevich were killed or went missing.

“There is no investigation,” Mr. Cooper said. “The Americans are not interested. They want them to disappear, and Nastya in particular, because she is a living witness.”

By the standards of Pattaya, a city notorious for its adult entertainment, the sex seminar for about 30 Russian tourists was tame.

A hotel spokeswoman, Joyce Ong, said the workshop was run like a “normal corporate seminar,” and she denied earlier reports that the staff had called the police.

None of those arrested were charged with sexual misconduct. Ms. Vashukevich was both Mr. Kirillov’s star pupil and one of the instructors at the seminars.

The chief of Thailand’s Immigration Bureau, Suttipong Wongpin, said his department had restricted the Belarusians’ visitors because letting them talk freely could harm Thailand’s relations with the United States and Russia.

“The detainees,” he said, “will just say whatever they want.”
