Foreign affairs minister Halbe Zijlstra has admitted lying about being at a meeting where Vladimir Putin supposedly set out his plans for a ‘Greater Russia’. 

Zijlstra claimed that he had overheard the Russian president talking about his expansionist ambitions during a gathering of businesspeople at Putin’s dacha in 2006. At the time Zijlstra was working for Shell. But in an interview in the Volkskrant at the weekend he admitted that he had not been at the meeting, but ‘borrowed’ the anecdote from someone whose identity he wanted to protect. ‘I made the decision that this is an important geopolitical story with serious implications,’ he said. ‘I put myself in the story to make sure that the revelations weren’t about the person who was actually there. Because that could have had implications for him or his company.’ 

In his original version of the story, which Zijlstra began relating at VVD party conferences in 2014, he claimed he had been a back room in the dacha when he heard Putin define ‘Greater Russia’ as ‘Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and the Baltic states,’ adding that ‘Kazakhstan was nice to have’. 

Doubts about the veracity of the foreign minister’s claims came to light when former senior Shell executive Jeroen van der Veer told the Volkskrant that Zijlstra had not been at the meeting in 2006. Zijlstra admitted he was not present but insisted that the substance of the story was true. 

‘Was it sensible to protect my source in the manner that I did? No, it wasn’t. But the information is correct,’ he said. He did not confirm whether Van der Veer was the source. Saudi Arabia should strengthen ties with Iran rather than befriend Israel and maintain an alliance with the United States, according to regime’s president.

“You are mistaken if you think Iran is not your friend, but the US and Israel are,” Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Wednesday, per state-run media. “This mentality is a strategic mistake and miscalculation.”

Iran and Saudi Arabia are traditional rivals in the Middle East, bulwarks of the two leading sects of Islam with competing geopolitical interests. The risk of direct conflict has risen in recent years, as the Iranians pursued nuclear weapons and propped up Syrian President Bashar Assad, while the Saudi Arabians are leading a campaign to defeat an Iran-linked insurgency in Yemen.

"The hostility of the Saudis toward Iran was covert in the past, but they are now openly engaged in enmity against Iran," Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani said last week.

That makes Rouhani’s hint at friendship ring hollow, but his remarks give voice to the recognition that alarm over Iran’s foreign policy has caused Saudi Arabia and Israel — who do not have formal diplomatic ties — to partner quietly against the threat. Rumors swirled as recently as September that the Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman made a secret visit to Israel, following a series of reports that the two sides have begun sharing intelligence about terrorist threats.

“You are well aware of the power and status of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Rouhani said in remarks addressed to Saudi Arabia. “Those more powerful than you have failed to do anything against the Iranian nation.”

The warning follows a week of rising tensions in the region. Lebanon’s prime minister, who had intended to oppose Iran’s terrorist proxies in the country, fled to Saudi Arabia and announced his resignation on Saturday. He cited the threat of assassination by Iran’s affiliates as his reason for stepping down. That same day, an Iran-backed militia in Yemen fired a ballistic missile at the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh, but it was intercepted.

"It was an Iranian missile, launched by Hezbollah, from territory occupied by the Houthis in Yemen,” Foreign Minister Adel bin Ahmed al-Jubeir told CNN.

That mention of Hezbollah, Iran’s terrorist proxy in Lebanon, speaks to one of Israel’s national security concerns. Iran has transferred thousands of rockets to Lebanon, which borders with Israel, and Hezbollah fighters have helped the regime take control of territory in Syria.

Stop killing farmers, demand protesters

Thousands of people, many of them farmers, drove in convoy to

Cape Town on Monday, eventually gathering at the Green Point stadium, to protest against farm murders. For much of the morning and afternoon the N1 into Cape Town moved at a snail’s pace.

“I want these killings to stop. I do not want any woman to suffer the way I did … My children are

heartbroken,” said Marlene Conradie, widow of murdered farmer Joubert Conradie of Uitkyk farm in Klapmuts.

“We are ordinary people who grow grapes, peaches and olives,” she said. Marlene and her two children, Hannes (15) and Jane (11), were marching in Monday’s protest, titled “Genoeg is genoeg, enough is enough”.

AfriForum says: “Since 1 January 2017, at least 341 farm attacks have been committed, during which at least 70 people have been murdered. This means that during 2017 so far, there has already been more farm murders than the total amount of farm murders during 2016.”

According to Africa Check “police’s statistics differ” from those

previously supplied by AfriForum. There are also other figures given by the Transvaal Agricultural Union. There are reasons for the differences based on methodology and also the definition of famer and farm or rural smallholding. It is extremely difficult to verify or determine how many farm owners have been killed on farms and also what the statistics are for farm workers living on farms.

The protesters wore black regalia and held placards with: “Stop killing farmers”, “In memory of murdered farmers” and “No farmer no food”. GroundUp saw just one person with a small old South African flag on their T-shirt.

A dairy farmer and wheat producer, Thys Swart Swellendam of Grootvadersbosch Landgoed,

told GroundUp: “We provide jobs for many farm workers and for each farmer that is killed, it means job losses and farms are ruined, and the secondary industry as well, because we produce raw materials for factories and other industries.”

He said farm workers are also attacked sometimes and their families are in danger. “We spent millions of rands just on security. That keeps us busy instead of growing food for the nation. With drought in the Western Cape, it is difficult because besides buying stock for animals we must also spend on security. Police, who should be providing security, are not doing that. Farmers are dependent on themselves and their neighbours.”

Some are however critical of the farmers. Colette Solomon, Director of Women on Farms Project (WFP) told GroundUp: “Women on farms do not feel safe from the farmers. They experience verbal, physical, sexual abuse and intimidation. Their tenure and housing rights are frequently violated but when they report to the police, police don’t take action. As a result most of them do not report abuse.”
