Polish authorities have arrested and charged three people with propagating fascism after a news program revealed details about a neo-Nazi group in Poland that celebrated Adolf Hitler in a ceremony last year, prosecutors said Tuesday.
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said Tuesday that the state would not tolerate any use of totalitarian symbols and he wants to see the neo-Nazi group outlawed.
The private news channel TVN24 broadcast an expose Saturday about "Pride and Modernity," a neo-Nazi group whose members dressed in Nazi uniforms and praised Hitler last spring on what would have been the German dictator's 128th birthday.
Poland was invaded and occupied by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union during World War II, and the existence of the pro-Hitler group has sparked shock and revulsion. About 6 million Polish citizens were killed in that conflict, while Polish cities were razed and the country's cultural heritage looted.
"In Poland we cannot have the slightest tolerance of Nazi, fascist or communist symbols," Morawiecki said at a news conference in Warsaw. "The use of them is against the law and against all of our values."
He also thanked the journalists who went undercover to document the activities of the neo-Nazi group, whose members chanted the "Sieg Heil" Nazi salute and praised Hitler at an altar in a wooded area at night as a swastika burned.
A spokeswoman for national prosecutors, Ewa Bialik, said that three suspected neo-Nazis were arrested and charged with propagating fascism, a crime that can carry a prison sentence of up to two years. She said one was found in possession of a weapon and ammunition.
A spokeswoman for district prosecutors in Gliwice, Joanna Smorczewska, said investigators also found fascist paraphernalia including Nazi uniforms. She said one of the suspects, identified only as Mateusz S., was the leader of the neo-Nazi group.
The World Jewish Congress on Monday said it welcomed "the Polish government's swift condemnation of this despicable celebration of Nazism and its rightful decision to open a criminal investigation."
But the organization's CEO Robert Singer said it should not be considered an isolated incident, noting that an ultra-nationalist rally on Poland's Independence Day in November drew 60,000 people, some of whom espoused white supremacist slogans.

Brussels to tell Poland ‘obey – or we won’t pay’ in judiciary showdown
Poland, the EU budget’s largest net beneficiary, caused outrage in Brussels after passing legislation to give the ruling Law and Justice party effective control over judicial appointments and the supreme court. The move, which the nation’s government claimed last month was a means of speeding up the legal process, was accused by international justice watchdog the Council of Europe as being a “grave threat” which “puts at serious risk the independence of all parts of the Polish judiciary”. And the bloc responded by invoking Article 7 – allowing them to level sanctions on Poland and revoke their EU voting rights
Now the EU are believed to be considering holding back cash from the less economically developed member state.
Poland was allocated €80billion of cohesion funds in the EU’s current €1trillion budget. But eurocrats reportedly see their next budget as a means of forcing their will on member states as they scramble to save money and force cohesion on the EU27 with expansive new projects in the wake of Brexit. Under the scheme, Brussels will demand member states have a “functioning and independent judiciary” – in a direct challenge to Warsaw.
Günther Oettinger, the EU’s budget commissioner, said the bloc are considering either making compliance a direct condition of claiming cash back from Brussels, or introducing an “incentive scheme” in which more obedience to the rule “could be seen as a way of getting more resources”.
Vera Jourova, the EU’s commissioner for justice, has been tasked with finding a way to assess a member state’s compliance, reiterating the the bloc might “insist that independent justice systems are necessary for the effective control of the use of EU funds”. The EU’s bid to bully Poland into changing the very fabric of their government follows demands from Paris to withhold cash from any nations who act “contrary to European goals”.
Speaking at a high-level conference on the EU budget for 2020-26, Nathalie Loiseau, a French European Affairs Minister, said "conditionality of funds was not a dirty word".
Mrs Loiseau said new budgets rules need to include "conditionality" provisions that would tie cohesion funding to member states’ adherence to minimum rule-of-law provisions. She added this issue was the "elephant in the room" at every EU meeting.
Mrs Loiseau said: "It would be totally inappropriate for a Member State to receive EU funds for a goal and pursue other goals with national money."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke on Sunday on the phone with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. The two leaders agreed to open "immediate dialogue" in an attempt to solve a crisis that erupted over a Polish bill that seeks to criminalize linking Poland to Nazi war crimes in the Holocaust.
The proposed Polish law caused a furor in Israel over the weekend after being passed by the lower house in the Polish parliament on Friday. The bill will now be debated in the upper house, after which it goes for the president’s approval.
In their phone conversation, the two leaders agreed that teams from both countries will open "immediate dialogue" and try to reach understandings on the pending legislation.
Earlier Sunday, Polish President Andrzej Duda said that he would only pass the bill after "careful analysis of the final shape of the act.”
In a statement released by his office, Duda said the law is “aimed at preventing lies and false accusations against the Polish people and the Polish nation.” For this reason, the president’s office said, whoever criticizes the law out of concern for the truth about the Holocaust can be at ease, since “the act meets their expectations and is not contradictory to them. The search and documentation of the truth, as well as prosecution and stigmatization of lies, are concurrent actions and have the same goal.”
