Saudi Arabia should strengthen ties with Iran rather than befriend Israel and maintain an alliance with the United States, according to regime’s president.

Rumors swirled as recently as September that the Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman made a secret visit to Israel, following a series of reports that the two sides have begun sharing intelligence about terrorist threats.

“You are well aware of the power and status of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Rouhani said in remarks addressed to Saudi Arabia. “Those more powerful than you have failed to do anything against the Iranian nation.”

The warning follows a week of rising tensions in the region. Lebanon’s prime minister, who had intended to oppose Iran’s terrorist proxies in the country, fled to Saudi Arabia and announced his resignation on Saturday. He cited the threat of assassination by Iran’s affiliates as his reason for stepping down. That same day, an Iran-backed militia in Yemen fired a ballistic missile at the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh, but it was intercepted.
